Observation Narrative
Plot is located along the headwaters of Coppahaunk Swamp, in a baldcypress - tupelo swamp on deep organic soils. Baldcypress are emergent over tupelos; a few very large loblolly pines are in the stand (one is in the plot), and a large tulip-poplar is located outside the plot. The site has extensive coarse woody debris, and patches of sphagnum are common. The eastern third of the plot extends into the channel of the swamp and supports a number of strongly hydrophytic herbs; the western two-thirds of the plot is slightly higher and supports extensive fern colonies. Baldcypress knees are < 50 cm tall. The upland to the west is in loblolly pine managed with prescribed fire for red cockaded woodpeckers. Not too far downstream is an old Mill Pond (Barrett's Pond) and dam.
